Reshaping the gum line by contouring
Where the gumline is uneven or shows too much when smiling, contouring restores balance.
A smile is not only teeth. If the gumline is uneven, or shows too much when you smile, the result reads as unbalanced even when the teeth are perfect.
A gummy smile is not always caused by excess gum; lip movement or jaw structure can also play a part. The cause is identified at the examination, and contouring is not the answer in every case.
Contouring makes the gumline symmetrical. It is usually completed in one session and heals quickly.
Who is it for?
- A gummy smile
- An uneven gumline
- Front teeth that look short
How the treatment works
- 01
Smile analysis
Lip line and tooth proportions are measured.
- 02
Planning
The new gumline is marked out and shown to you first.
- 03
Contouring
Excess gum tissue is removed with a scalpel or laser, and the margins are made symmetrical.
After your treatment
Brush the area gently for the first few days and avoid hot, spicy food. The gum margin settles into its final shape within two weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Will the gum grow back?
When it is planned to preserve the natural distance between gum and bone, the result is lasting; if necessary, the bone is reshaped during the same procedure. Any gum inflammation is treated first.
Can it be combined with veneers?
They are often planned together: the gumline is corrected first and the veneers made to the new proportions.
