Periodontics
Treatment of the gums and surrounding bone
Gum recession and bone loss can be halted early; treatment begins with non-surgical cleaning.
Periodontics concerns the gum and bone that hold teeth in place. In adults, one of the main causes of tooth loss is gum disease, which can advance without symptoms.
Treated early it is not surgical: cleaning calculus and root surfaces halts the inflammation in most cases. Advanced cases may need surgery to reduce pocket depth and, where possible, to partly regain lost support.
Who is it for?
- Gums that bleed when brushing
- Persistent bad breath
- Teeth that feel loose or have shifted
How the treatment works
- 01
Measurement
Pocket depths and bone level are recorded.
- 02
Deep cleaning
Calculus is removed and the root surfaces are smoothed and cleared of bacterial film.
- 03
Reassessment
Pockets are remeasured six weeks later.
After your treatment
The outcome depends on care at home. Without regular interdental cleaning, pockets can deepen again. A periodontal check-up every 3-6 months is recommended after treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Does gum recession grow back?
Not on its own. Progression can be stopped, and selected cases can be covered with a graft.
Is treatment painful?
It is done under local anaesthetic; some sensitivity for a few days afterwards is normal.
